Big Chicken Commemorative Book
Led the creation of a keepsake book to celebrate a significant KFC renovation in Marietta, Ga., that helped save a local landmark — the Big Chicken.
A leading fast food franchiser needed a gift-worthy keepsake to celebrate the opening of a new Kentucky Fried Chicken concept in Marietta, Ga. Together with my client, we proposed a commemorative book tracing the history of the site, its beloved chicken statue and the results of a $2.2 million renovation.

With the book concept approved, I led the creation of a page plan, research, writing, editing and help with image sourcing. My client empowered me with flexibility to create the type of book that I thought would have the most meaning; then, we brought it to life.
The Big Chicken is part historical record, part visitor's guide and part success story. The book introduces Stanley R. Tubby Davis, creator of The Big Chicken in 1963, and why he invested in the fabrication of a 53-foot tall metal chicken. The story continues with a brief examination of KFC's early days, including the origin of Colonel Sanders, before morphing into a present-day account of a community campaign to save The Big Chicken after extensive storm damage, followed years later by a significant renovation to honor The Big Chicken while also introducing a cutting-edge KFC concept complete with a food theater, soda fountains filled with locally made craft sodas, and an on-site retail shop.
